Behind the Scenes: Technical Professions in Action

Technical Direction: Charting the Course of the Legend

Even before the riders set off, a massive effort goes into planning each stage. Thierry Gouvenou, technical director of the Tour de France at ASO (Amaury Sport Organisation) and a graduate of éklore-ed (formerly CNPC Sport), coordinates the development of the route. His role is to create a balanced, spectacular, and safe route in collaboration with host cities, technical teams, prefectures, and law enforcement agencies.

Bicycle logistics: precision engineering

Each team brings along a veritable army of specialized mechanics. Working behind the scenes, they adjust, prepare, and repair every bike with pinpoint precision. Hydraulic brakes, power meters, electronic drivetrain management… The modern bike is a technological marvel, and its maintenance is critical to the riders’ athletic performance.

Some mechanics can take apart and reassemble an entire bike in less than 20 minutes and are often called upon to perform emergency repairs, sometimes in a moving car, between two Alpine passes.

Journalist / Consultant: Breaking down the race for the general public

The role of a cycling consultant requires two types of expertise: technical and communicative. You need to know cycling inside and out, be able to analyze the race in real time, and also explain the information in simple terms to engage a broad audience, which may include beginners. All of this must be done with a sense of timing and the ability to improvise, because anything can change in the blink of an eye on the Tour de France route.

A look at some unusual careers:

  • Tank drivers: specially trained to drive slowly in a convoy, sometimes on steep terrain.
  • Promotional merchandise logistics coordinators: Every day, they manage tons of products, ensuring they are loaded into the right vehicles at the right time.
  • Micro-event hosts: juggling music, safety, entertainment, and crowd management.
  • Safety coordinators: must deal with crowds, weather conditions, road hazards, and the proximity of runners.

The Caravan: A Large-Scale Traveling Show

Even before the riders arrive, the festivities have already begun. The promotional parade—that grand procession of decorated vehicles handing out giveaways—involves dozens of distinct professions: drivers, entertainers, hostesses, sound technicians, event engineers… Each brand creates its own unique atmosphere, balancing visual creativity with safety requirements.

Coming soon: an interview with Marc Fanes—a driver for the Tour de France caravan with several Tour de France races under his belt.
